Clinical Expertise

Dr Tang has expertise in the following specialised clinical areas:

  • Diabetic foot wound salvage and ulcer healing
  • Superficial and Deep endovenous surgery (for varicose veins, venous leg ulcers, swollen legs, deep vein thrombosis)
  • Access solutions for dialysis-dependent end-stage kidney disease patients (Arterio-venous fistula (AVF) and arterio-venous graft (AVG) creation and Tenckhoff peritoneal catheter)
  • Peripheral artery disease management (lower limb revascularisation procedures such as lower limb angioplasty (ballooning), stenting, surgical bypass and artery widening operations for leg artery blockages)

He employs minimally invasive techniques and focuses on managing complex arterial and venous vascular cases.

Academic Work

Dr Tang achieved positions as regular rank Associate Professor by Duke NUS Graduate Medical School, Singapore and Clinical Senior Lecturer and Adjunct Associate Professor by Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He has written or co-authored nearly 300 peer-reviewed publications and has 10 book chapters and 5 books to his name. Regionally, he has travelled extensively to run multiple endovascular lower limb revascularisation workshops, serving as an expert proctor and case demonstrator for superficial and deep endovenous surgery devices. He is a regularly invited speaker at international and regional vascular conferences.

As the senior academic vascular and endovascular surgeon at SGH, he led an impressive portfolio of international randomised controlled trials, endovascular device evaluation studies and first-in-man industry registries to aid FDA device approval.

Awards

In recognition of his dedicated clinical service contributions to his patients, Dr Tang has been recognised with Silver and Long Service Awards by SingHealth and Service with a Heart Award by Singapore General Hospital. He is known as an outstanding educator having received the Residency In SingHealth Excels (RISE) award in 2019.

He was also the first ever vascular surgeon in Singapore to be bestowed the prestigious National Medical Research Council (NMRC) Clinician Scientist Award (CSA) to identify clinical characteristics of diabetic chronic limb threatening ischaemia patients associated with good vs poor prognosis.

Other Activities

He currently serves as a member of the Ministry of Health National Diabetic Foot and Cardiovascular Devices Workgroups. He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and is a MRCS Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
